Long long ago the fort was built by a ruler named Madho Singh, who was the younger son of Raja Bhagwant Das. It was once a thriving town and thousands of people lived here happily, but today, the fort stands silent and in ruin and fragmented condition and become famous for its mystery, legends, and stories that blend history with supernatural beliefs. So far the Fist Story is concern there was a holy man named Bala Nath, a sadhu who lived in the area where the fort was to be built. Once Prince Madho Singh planned to construct a fort there so, he sought the sadhu’s permission. The sadhu agreed but made a strict condition that the fort’s shadow must never fall on his house. Madho Singh promised him that this condition will be apply during the fort construction. However, as time passed, one of Madho Singh’s successors raised the walls of the fort higher, therefore the shadow of the fort, fall on Bala Nath’s house. Bala Nath became angry. Due to the broken promise, Bala Nath cursed the fort and the whole town. By this curse, strange and unfortunate incidents began happening in this area. The town became unlucky for all so, the people slowly left it, fearing the curse.

The second story is a tragic tale of love, magic, and revenge. It tells about a beautiful princess named Ratnavati and a black magician or tantric named Singhia. Singhia fell deeply in love with the princess and wanted to get marry her. To win her love, he prepared a magical oil that will control her mind if she touched it. But the wise princess saw through his evil plan. Upon discovering this, she threw the magical oil onto a large boulder nearby area. The boulder became rolled down and crushed Singhia to death. Before dying, Singhia cursed the entire town. Due to his curse the fort was attacked and destroyed, the town fell into ruin, and Princess Ratnavati died during these tragic events.
Due to these curses, it is widely believed that no one can stay inside Bhangarh Fort after dark. The government (Archaeological Survey of India) has placed a notice board here in which it is clearly instructed that stay inside the fort premises after sunset is strictly prohibited. Many visitors say that during the night they hear strange noises, see shadows of something moving, or feel that they are being watched by some one. These creepy experiences have further increased the fort’s reputation as a haunted place of India. Now a days Bhangarh Fort is calculated as the most haunted destination of India.
Despite these chilling stories, Bhangarh Fort remains a famous tourist destination for the people of India. People though out India visit this place during the day time to admire its stunning architecture, ancient temples, palaces, and the peaceful beauty of the surrounding Aravalli hills.
